1)  Knowledge aims:

①  Students are able to understand, read, say and write the new words “cook, swim and the new phrases“play basketball, speak English and play ping-pong”.

② Students are able to understand the sentence pattern: Can you______ ? Yes, I can./ No, I can’t.

2 Ability aims: Students are able to use the sentence pattern “Can you …?”,“Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.”flexibly in real life situation.

3)  Emotional aims: Cultivate students’ sense of discovery in ability .

 1. Warm-up

1)Make a game.

I take a ping pong, and ask some students to pass one by one, then I say “stop”, the student who takes the ping pong will answer me a question—What can you do? Look at the screen, say and act what he/she can do.

This game can review some words and phrases and cultivate students’ interest on what he can do.

2) Lead-in

T: Boys and girls, do you know your teachers well? Let’s check.

She can drive a car. She can sing. She can dance. She can teach English.


2. Presentation

1) Introduce a new friend Yao Ming to the students.

T: Boys and girls, you can do so many things. You are good. I like sports. I also like sportsman. Now I want to introduce my friend to you. He is great. Look, he is coming! Let’s go and see.

2) Learn the new words/phrases and the sentences.

Shows the picture of Sun Yang . The teacher asks the students “ What can he do? ”

Students answer “He can swim.”(Practice the new word “swim”.)

T: Can you swim?

S: Yes, I can./ No, I can’t.

Play a dialogue to students. The teacher asks the students “What can they speak?”

Students answer “ They can speak English.”( Practice reading the new phrase “speak English”)

Learn “play ping-pong”, “cook”, “play basketball” in different ways.

The students start to learn new words and phrases by different ways that can make the students interested in learning them.


3. Practice& Extension

Task1 : Guess, guess, guess.

Show some pictures and ask some students to guess what he/they can do.

The students review the words and phrases that have learnt in class.

Task 2: Pair work

B: Great!

This task designs four situations for students. They can make a dialogue with one of the situations.  It can practice students language expression.

Task 3: Write and say

1) Listen and answer  Who is she?

2)Read together and underline the words what Sarah can do.

S1:What can Sarah do?

S2: She can speak English and Chinese, sing English song, dance, swim, cook and play ping-pong.

S1: What can’t Sarah do?

S2: She can’t do any kung fu. She can’t play the pipa.

3) Group work

Four students as one group, every group has a leader who will give a report on his/her group.

Students can find their abilities by this step. And it can practice students’ ability of language application.

4. Summary

Summarize the new words/phrases/sentence patterns and evaluate the performance of students.

5. Homework

1) Listen to the tape, read the words and phrases aloud.

2) Interview what your friend can do and what can’t your friend do with your friends.

7. Reflections:

  This class makes the students learn some new words and phrases. Students learn to say what they can do and what they can’t do. I use HHT to stimulate students to learn English. I develop some pair work and group work. I also make the situational approach. But some students can’t express their ideas fluently in English. So I should practice their spoken English every day and enhance their spoken language.
